I don’t know about you, but with every year that passes, I’m getting more and more tired of buying useless gifts for my loved ones. For several years now, I’ve been trying to focus on practical gifts that really add value to someone’s life. Something that fits very well within those requirements is gifts that help keep the women in my life safer. In addition to being a Christian blogger, I’m also a safety educator. It’s my passion to make sure women are protected in their everyday lives. I am partnered with a self-defense tool company to provide women with the tools they need to stay safe. You can check out my safety educator business at hereverdaydefense.com.

Since I always share gift guides on this blog around the holidays, I decided to include this one because the safety of loved ones is important to everyone! In this blog post, I’ll walk you through useful types of self-defense tools (from pepper spray to tactical pens to concealed-carry purses), and why each one can be an effective way to improve personal protection for any woman.

Why Give Self-defense Tools + Education?

Gifting self defense tools is a great idea, and I highly recommend it. Tools meet women where they are. In a fast-paced world, someone might not have time for a long self-defense class or to get a black belt in a traditional martial art like kung fu or jujitsu. But remember, tools don’t replace situational awareness, verbal de-escalation, or regular practice. They supplement them.

For a more in-depth and focused training, the company I’m partnered with offers detailed online trainings called safety sessions for situational awareness, early prevention mindset, personal protection usage, human trafficking, and dating safety. A thoughtful tool, plus some added education to practice basic self-defense techniques, is a perfect one-two punch: personal safety in the moment, and the chance to build skills in conjunction with those tools.

Why Self Defense Tools Should Be Layered

self defense products

Before we get into the different types of self defense tools, we have to talk about why each one matters, and carrying more than one is recommended. Most women don’t want to be loaded down with self defense tools, and I get that. But in real life, it doesn’t matter which self defense tool you prefer to use, because you might not get the chance, depending on the situation.

When you’re thinking about personal protection, you have to consider worst-case scenarios so you’re prepared for anything. For example, you might prefer carrying pepper spray because you want to keep a potential attacker at a safe distance from you to avoid physical contact. Ideally, that’s how we would all have things go down. But what if someone sneaks up and surprises you by wrapping their arms around you from behind? Pepper spray will be useless. You need a plan B in this instance. That could be a stun gun or something like a keychain kubaton.

At the very least, I suggest every woman carry at least two self defense tools and have some basic knowledge of self defense techniques plus a plan for how and when they will use each tool. Okay, let’s get into the details of each tool.

Types of Self Defense Tools

Pepper spray is lightweight, easy to use, and can stop an attacker before they get too close and long enough to escape. It’s one of the most common self-defense weapons for civilians.

Notes: Check local laws — pepper spray legality and allowed sizes vary.

Choose a pepper spray here. My personal favorite, and the only compact pepper spray on the market that features a disable pin (so your attacker can’t use the pepper spray against you), is the protected pepper. Get it here. You can also get this pepper spray with Shield Technology.

Stun gun: close-range option

A stun gun can disable an attacker at extremely close range without causing permanent injury. These tools are a way to create an opening to run.

Notes: These are close-range combat tools, not for long distances. Close range might not sound ideal for your loved one, but again, it’s important to have a plan B if the first choice, like pepper spray, is either disabled or a surprise attack happens before you have the chance to use pepper spray. Again, check local laws.

Keychain kubotan & tactical pens: discreet and practical

A keychain kubaton (short impact tool) or tactical pen looks like an everyday item but provides a way to push, jab, or create space when needed. They’re compact, inexpensive, and great for everyday carry.

Notes: They’re not weapons for attacking; their strength is in quick, swift strikes to vulnerable areas and giving you time to flee. These are a good option for close contact and will help a woman cause some physical pain to their attacker, no matter how big or strong they are.

Safety whistle & alarm devices: Attention is protection

A loud safety whistle or personal alarm draws attention quickly. There may be times when force isn’t necessary, or times when a loud noise that draws attention intimidates an attacker. Many attackers rely on silence, so a shrill alarm interrupts that plan.

Notes: These are also excellent for kids who aren’t at a safe or legal age to carry other personal protection tools. A personal alarm with the added protection of Shield Technology is ideal for anyone of any age. Shield Technology is an app that pairs with your personal alarm. Your loved ones download the app on their phone, and in the event of an emergency, if you set off your personal alarm, they are notified of the emergency and sent your location. The alarm continues to send your location to your emergency contacts until you turn it off in your own app. Check it out here.

Concealed-carry purses & Accessories: safety with style

Concealed carry bags aren’t just for firearms; they’re great for stun guns, too. And your body isn’t the only thing that needs protecting; your finances and identity matter too. That’s where RFID wallets come in. They block radio frequency identification scanning of your credit cards to prevent identity and credit card theft. Concealed carry bags offer secure compartments and sometimes even lockable zippers or an integrated holster for legally carried items. They reduce the chance of being an easy target and make it harder for a pickpocket or attacker to access essentials.

Notes: If the person you’re gifting to is interested in firearm self-defense, pair this with training and a respectful reminder about local laws and safe storage.

Car and Travel Safety

One of the most important areas of safety for women is road/travel safety. Whether they’re just out and about on a normal day, on a road trip with their girlfriends, or flying to another state. Having the right safety tools is so important!

Every woman’s car should be equipped with this roadside emergency bundle! You can get both of these products separately as well, (Roadtrip tool and Junk in the Trunk). These tools are invaluable for a woman on the road by herself or with other women.

Other great safety items for travel are tools like a hair brush that’s actually a diversion safe and a portable door alarm for hotels or rentals. The diversion safe can store things like cash or pepper spray and is perfect to keep your valuables safe on vacation.

Tools + Training = Real Protection

Tools work best when paired with basic self-defense knowledge and self-defense training. Encourage regular practice so that reaction time and muscle memory improve. Even verbal self-defense and verbal de-escalation are powerful tools — sometimes the best defense is getting out of a scenario without a physical altercation. In my private Facebook group, I help women with these techniques so they can feel confident in their everyday lives.

Should you gift martial arts classes instead (or too)?

I would say, if a woman in your life has expressed interest, absolutely consider a self-defense class or lessons at local martial arts schools. Depending on where you live, self defense classes can be hard to find, but martial arts schools are typically easy to find anywhere. For self defense, I recommend RAD Self Defense classes, which I have taken myself. See if there is one near you, here.

For martial arts, styles like krav maga, muay thai, brazilian jiu-jitsu, or jeet kune do each have their strengths:

  • Krav Maga: focused on real-life situations and practical application (great for worst-case scenarios).
  • Muay Thai: excellent for powerful strikes, knee strikes, and elbow strike work.
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: emphasizes grappling techniques, joint locks, and ground control; useful if a fight goes to the ground.
  • Jeet Kune Do / Wing Chun / Kung Fu / Mixed Martial Arts (MMA style): offer various tools for close-range attacks, hand strikes, and adaptability.

Pairing tool gifts with training reinforces basic self-defense techniques, hand-eye coordination, and overall physical fitness, all of which reduce reliance on brute force and increase maximum efficiency regardless of fitness level.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Always check local laws before gifting self-defense tools. Laws on stun guns, pepper spray, and armed self-defense differ widely.
  • Encourage proper training. Even a 1-time class teaches wrist releases, palm strike basics, and how to avoid being an easy target.
  • Emphasize situational awareness and verbal self-defense. Tools are a last resort, not a license to escalate.
  • If someone is interested in a martial arts style, suggest they try a controlled environment at a gym or local martial arts school before committing. Regular practice is the best way to build confidence and self-defense skills.

Gifting Personal Protection

Gifting personal protection is thoughtful, practical, and can genuinely help someone feel safer. The best way to approach it is with respect: consider the recipient’s comfort, fitness level, and interest in self-defense training. Tools like pepper spray, tactical pens, and concealed-carry purses are smart on their own, and they reach their full potential when paired with basic self-defense knowledge, situational awareness, and possibly a class or group to provide that needed education.
