Have you ever just not wanted to pray? It’s okay, you can admit it, we’ve all been there. Trying to figure out how to pray when you don’t want to can be frustrating. I know there are many different reasons you might find yourself in a lull in your prayer life, but whatever the reason is, you know you have to get it back on track. Let’s be honest, sometimes that very simple fact makes it even harder.
Maybe it’s life’s chaos, unanswered prayers, or even just a hard time you’re going through that’s caused this disconnect. Trying to figure out how to pray when you don’t want to is a real challenge, but the good news is that God’s love for you doesn’t depend on how consistent or eloquent your prayers are.
Even when we’re struggling, Christ Jesus meets us in our broken hearts. He’s not looking for perfect prayers; He’s longing for a relationship with you. So, how can you approach prayer when it feels like the last thing you want to do? Let’s talk about some helpful reminders that can reignite your spiritual life.
How to Pray When You Don’t Want to
Be Honest With God
The best way to start is with honesty. God already knows your heart, so there’s no need to sugarcoat your feelings. You might pray, “Dear Heavenly Father, I’m struggling to pray. I don’t have the right words, but I need Your peace to guide me.”
Honesty is the first step in overcoming a lack of prayer. The Bible reminds us in Psalm 34:18 that the Lord Jesus is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Whether you feel a lack of faith, a lack of desire, or a lack of words, remember this: God’s promises are true, and He hears even your simplest cries for help.
Lean on the Word of God
When you can’t find the right words for your own prayers, turn to the Word of God. The Psalms are a great way to reconnect with God. Praying through passages like Psalm 23 or Psalm 46 can help you find peace in His will. These scriptures remind us that even in the hardest times, the Almighty God is our refuge and strength.
The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 is another great way to center your prayer time. Focusing on phrases like “give us this day our daily bread” can shift your perspective from what you lack to the good things God provides. Using a prayer journal with scripture prompts is really helpful too. Keep reading to see the journals I’m loving right now.
Use Worship as Prayer
Your favorite worship music can be a lifeline when your praying life feels off. Singing along or simply listening to lyrics that declare the power of prayer and the name of Jesus can lift your spirit. Worship softens the heart and reminds you of God’s love and the peace of God that surpasses understanding.
Show Up, Even If It’s Messy
Just do it. Even when it’s not perfect. The only thing God asks is that you come to Him, even if your heart feels distant. Whether it’s in silence, through tears, or while journaling, the act of showing up is what matters most. The throne of grace is always open to you, and taking that first step toward Him can bring incredible healing.
Ask the Holy Spirit for Help
The Holy Spirit is your helper, especially when you’re unsure what to pray. Romans 8:26 reminds us that the Spirit intercedes for us through wordless groans. If you’re facing a similar situation where prayer feels impossible, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. Praying in Jesus’ name invites His power into your life, even when you don’t feel it.
Remember the Why
Prayer isn’t just a spiritual chore; it’s about connecting with the Creator of the universe. When you shift your perspective from “I have to pray” to “I get to spend time with the Lord Jesus,” it changes everything.
My Current Favorite Prayer Tool
For years I’ve been using a prayer journal, but it was just a blank notebook that I filled with my prayers. Lately, that hasn’t been enough for me. It’s like the words just don’t come or they just feel empty. I went on a hunt for something that would make my prayers more focused without me having to decide what to focus on and I found these journals. These have made such a huge difference in my prayer life lately.

These prayer journals focus on six foundational concepts of Christianity that bring you back to basics and help you focus on the goodness of God. I’m only on my first journal, I started with wisdom, but I can’t wait to get to the rest. These are great resources and some of the most affordable I’ve found. These are perfect to help yourself or good friends and family through their prayer struggles, or just help you learn more or refresh your knowledge on these topics. With each day, you’re given a short study and a directed focus for prayer. I hope you’ll enjoy them as much as I am!

Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, it’s okay to feel disconnected. What matters is that you take the first step toward reconnecting with Christ Jesus. Prayer isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being present.
So, the next time you face a lack of prayer or a hard time finding the right things to say, remember this: God’s peace is waiting for you, His healing hands are ready to comfort you, and His presence is always near. Take your burdens to the throne of grace—He’s already there with open arms.
