Have you been wondering what to get the fitness lover in your life for Christmas? The internet is full of suggestions. I scanned through them I couldn’t help but think that I wouldn’t want or need more than half the things suggested. Not to mention all the suggestions were super expensive and largely unnecessary.
As a certified personal trainer and long time fitness lover I have some suggestions that have become staples to me in my fitness journey. Fitness essentials, things that regular people might actually find useful and that won’t break the bank, along with a few pricier options that are super useful. The products are things I already use, brand specific and my favorites after using other brands in all of these products, but you can always check out different brands if you want to. Just so you know, these companies are not paying me to promote their products, but this post does contain some affiliate links. Okay, let’s jump right in.
Helpful Workout and Recovery Tools
JLab Audio Metal Bluetooth Wireless Rugged Earbuds. Even if the fitness junkie in your life already has wireless earbuds, we always need backups! I can’t tell you how many times I forget to charge mine and wish I had a backup the next day. These are a great deal and I can vouch for the quality. Mine sound good and I haven’t had a bit of trouble from them. They sync easily and are easy to use. Also included are soft silicone tips in three different sizes to fit any ear and these neat little things called cush fins to keep the earbuds in your ears when you’re running and jumping around (not pictured, you can click on the link under the photo to see them). That is my favorite feature! Plus, this is $20 cheaper than I got mine for so – bonus!
Amazon Basics High-Density Road Foam Roller, 36-inches. I love this foam roller. Sure, there are much fancier looking ones with all the knobs and special construction for deep tissue massage, but those can be pretty intense. This is a great one to start with. Most people find that foam rolling is a little uncomfortable at first, so I don’t recommend using a very deep penetrating roller if you’re new to it all together. This one is extra-firm and I use it regularly. The length of this foam roller is nice because you have plenty of room to move around in order to go through a full body sequence easily.
Fit Simplify Resistance Loop Exercise Bands. These bands are an excellent tool for use in the gym or at home. They are great for women who aren’t ready to hit the weights yet or for seasoned fitness lovers who just like to challenge their bodies in different ways. They are also perfect for travel if you need something small and easy to pack to keep your workouts challenging when you don’t have access to a gym. I have used these bands for everything from stretching, to workouts, to injury rehab. This set also comes with a bag to easily to carry your bands with you, an Ebook, and online workouts.
YogaAccessories yoga mat. I’ve been certified with ACE as a personal trainer for three years, I worked with tons of clients and members in a gym setting and online, and I have just been into fitness or some form of sport or physical activity for most of my life. I have come to firmly believe that the benefits of yoga as a whole are matched by no other form of physical activity. It is my opinion that yoga for fitness should be incorporated into every single person’s workout regimen no matter age, sex, fitness level, or goals.
The benefits include increased flexibility, increased muscle tone and strength, improved respiration and energy, improved cardio and circulatory health, improved athletic performance, and protection from injury. Yoga will increase your range of motion from head to toe, which everyone needs. It’s low impact and an excellent choice for literally anyone and everyone. Your fitness loving friend or relative might already have a yoga mat, but you can never have too many. I have two right now. One I keep at home and one in my car for when I visit yoga studios or do yoga in the park.
Memberships, Subscriptions and Personal Training
Gym Membership. This is a more expensive option, but depending on the type of facility you choose, you can usually get a pretty good deal paying in advance for a membership. When I say gym membership also think yoga studios, cardio studios, or any cool workout place in your area. Maybe your fitness loving friend has been an avid outdoor runner but wants to expand and start doing some cross training in the gym to improve their running. Or maybe they are just getting started but they are struggling with that scary word, “commitment,” and haven’t taken the plunge to join a gym. Maybe they are avid gym goers and you know they would really appreciate a few months on you.
Either way, if the gym is something that the fitness lover in your life is into or wants to get into, every fitness lover I know would jump for joy if someone picked up the bill for that expense, even if it’s only for a month. A lot of people want to join a gym and they can afford the monthly fee but the upfront costs are too high for them. Check with your local gyms and ask if you can either get a gift certificate for the sign up fees or just go ahead and pay them and get some sort of proof of that to give as a gift.
Online Fitness Subscriptions. Maybe your fitness loving friend doesn’t like the idea of working out in a gym at all. There are a lot of online programs that they can subscribe to that will help them reach their goals from home. For a wide variety of full programs, including nutrition, I recommend Beachbody OnDemand.
Full disclosure, I’m a Beachbody coach. But even if I weren’t, I would still recommend it and still use it. In fact, I used it before I became a coach and I just continue to be impressed by the programs they launch consistently. Just do a quick Google search and you’ll find that the value of this whole package outweighs every other online service out there in terms of variety, quality of content, and price. With this subscription comes access to currently 60 full programs (they launch at least one new program a year, if not more), there’s something for everyone and every fitness level.
These programs include the hugely popular classic P90x, Insanity, and 21 Day Fix and new programs like 80 Day Obsession, Shift Shop, and Core De Force. You can check out the subscription levels here. Again, full disclosure, this is my link so I do profit from any purchase made through this link. The cool thing is, Beachbody isn’t just about hooking people up with fitness programs. If you sign up your fitness loving friend, they also get a 1:1 coach who they can reach out to at anytime. So if you purchase the subscription through the link above, they’ll get me as their coach!
Personal Training Sessions. I know most people’s minds go straight to “that’s too expensive” when they think about personal trainers. Sure, it can be very expensive, but it doesn’t actually have to be a long term relationship. Some people just need a few sessions to learn some basics and start feeling more comfortable working out on their own. If the fitness lover in your life just needs a boost of confidence and some pointers to begin with a good foundation, contact a local trainer and talk to them about what they can offer along those lines.
Your local gyms are a decent place to start, but I wouldn’t always count on those trainers to be certified. I recommend you check out Idea Fit’s Find a Personal Trainer tool to find a trainer near you. You can find me on there as well if you’re local and interested in working with me. I also work online one-on-one with clients who are willing to meet via video call. Whoever you choose, make sure that person has a personal training certification and not just a group exercise certification. Those are two very different qualifications. I wrote a blog post about the things you should consider if you’re thinking about hiring a personal trainer, it should help you decide. You can read it here.
Freshware Meal Prep Containers. A key to success in most things is preparation and nutrition is no exception. Since we are all busy, we know that whatever food is the easiest to access when we are ready to eat is the food that’s going to be eaten. These meal prep containers are handy, lightweight but durable, and I like the sections for people who don’t like their food to touch (I’m not one of those people, but I know those people take this seriously). Plus the lids snap on nice and tightly so they don’t leak if they get turned over somehow.
If your fitness loving friend meal preps they will love these. Even if they have some already, you can never have too many (in my opinion). Besides, they are probably be in the same situation as me and somehow they’re left with all lids right now and not able to find a single container in their kitchen to put their food in. Where do these things disappear to? I have to believe they are somewhere enjoying life with my missing socks.
Under Armour Sideline 32 Ounce Squeezable Water Bottle. I am one of those people who buys new water bottles all the time trying to find one that will make me drink more water. I’ll let you in on a little secret: there is no water bottle that will make you drink more water. But this one is so handy. Any sports water bottle, really. The squeezable ones with a one-way valve so there’s no lid or anything that has to be opened. Just squeeze and drink. Its so much more convenient and, in my opinion, convenience is king when it comes to changing a habit. The easier you make it on yourself, the better.
Nutritionist Sessions. I wouldn’t get hung up on what you think this might cost. Look into it first because pricing tend to vary widely depending on your location. This is such a practical and useful gift for someone who just doesn’t know where to start with their nutrition. Most people get stuck here, trying to figure out how to eat well and how to make it less complicated and sustainable. There is so much diet noise out there. A nutritionist is the perfect gift for someone who is just getting started on their fitness journey. It’s also ideal for someone who is feeling stuck and not seeing progress and wants a solution that actually leads to a lifestyle change. Be sure to find someone who is certified. You can use Idea Fit’s Find a Nutritionist tool here.
Audible. This might seem like it’s not related to fitness, but so much of fitness is a mental game so I always include personal growth. If you have been following me for any time you have probably already caught on to my obsession with mental health and personal growth. Learning how to be self-reflective, open to growth, and filling your mind with positive and challenging ideas is so important to our overall health.
Audible is an awesome gift because instead of giving one book, you’re giving at least one a month for the length of the subscription. Plus they will have the option to purchase more each month if they want to. So much more opportunity for growth! It’s especially beneficial for the busiest people in your life (even those not into fitness) because they won’t have to sit down and read. Audible is books read to you via an app, so you can listen on the go. You can purchase the gift of one, three, six, or twelve months.
